Aya Marikeni:

Archangels Rugby 7975

A Note from the Oikos INTL Founders:

Co-founder, Alan Murdock, met Benjamin Mumba while on sabbatical during the peak of the COVID epidemic while grocery shopping.  A kind gentleman assisted Alan with an “unusual” food request for Africa --- Vanilla Pudding mix. During “the expedition” It was obvious this man was extremely educated working well beyond his gifting. It wouldn’t be until a few weeks later that Alan would find out how right he was. Benjamin has two bachelor’s degrees (Arts Degree in Education, Arts (Honors) in Theology and one master’s degree in theology (Missiology and Development) from Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. His emigration to Cape Town from distant Malawi was to seek answers to help his own people as, Benjamin was “stuck”. It was this fateful meeting that changed everything.

Meet Coach “Aya Mac”

My name is Ayabulela Marikeni, most people call me “Aya Mac”.   I am from the Xhosa tribe, the same tribe as Nelson Mandela. I moved to Cape Town with my father and sisters. My mother abandoned us when we were just babies and continues in active addiction even today.  My father came here for a better life and to provide for his children. But it hasn’t been easy. We moved into the township of Masiphumelele, an overcrowded village with shacks that leak and limited water and sewage capabilities.  Life is hard here and many turn to drugs, gangs and more. To help my father, I was fortunate and got a job at a garden center. I started working on the weekends in the 9th grade and have worked there full-time until the end January of 2024 over the last few years. And so begins my new adventure as a coach of a nonprofit (NGO) rugby team called the Archangels.

I became a Christian a year and a half ago, when meeting Alan Murdock “Pops” from Oikos INTL. I, like many others in our community turned to gang life, drugs and alcohol to dim the pain of hopelessness and in particular when our rugby field and rugby was taken away to a wealthier community. When I came to know Christ, I gave up those worldly things immediately and today I’m walking with other youth and young men from my community into a path of hope and wholeness with the Gospel and Rugby.

As I wrap up my time as a barista, I'm diving headfirst into a cause close to my heart – the Archangels Rugby team in my community of Masiphumelele. I have partnered with Oikos INTL to help educate and minister to our team through several programs and my team is excited. Will you pray for us, as our competitors are trying to tear down our men striving for hope by calling them “Hookah Pipe Boys” and “addicts”. Together, we can overcome this stigma and show the world that God and others care for “the least of these”.

THE MINISTRY: THE ARCHANGELS RUGBY 7975

We’ve been called the “Hookah Pipe Boys” and “Addicts” and the truth is not too far from that. But today, we “addicts” have a new hope. We are training and walking away from the difficult things in our community. I will be clean in recovery for 2 years soon.

The Archangels is a “Rugby Travel Team” which means we don’t play to win seasons, but our young men train to be scouted by amateur and pro teams… all while their lives are transforming and they are getting back into education after being dropouts. Rugby Travel Teams are usually for the wealthy so we started ours as a nonprofit in order to raise support so youth from Masiphumelele and beyond can participate in something that was never meant for them. Our young men are learning to handle the pressures of life as they continue in their love for Rugby.

Because we are a nonprofit, we need your help. Will you partner with us to bring hope and stability to a hurting community?  South Africa’s love for sport will help to transform our community as they see us “Hookah Pipe Boys” soar as the Archangels.
